Local Heroes for Net Zero

In April 2021, the UK Government announced the world’s most ambitious climate change target, cutting emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels bringing the UK more than three-quarters of the way to net zero by 20501. And as more than 20% of the world's largest corporations (with sales of more than $14trn) have now committed to net-zero targets2.

The focus so far is on international and national commitments and the response and ambition from large, global businesses. However, transitioning to Net Zero cannot happen without considerable effort and support at a community level.

As a brilliant report3 from IPPR and Local Trust points out, “the changes now required will affect people’s everyday lives… right across every aspect of the economy and society there will be changes to industry, food, land use, transport, housing and planning in a way that everyone and all communities will see and feel”

In this Upside, we look at UK communities, by way of example, exploring how they can contribute to and benefit from the transition to Net Zero – and we share some of the inspiring examples of where this is already happening.
