The Real Toy Story

With billions of children around the world, it’s no wonder the global toy industry is worth $95 billion1. Toys bring joy to all households across the globe and form a part of our earliest memories. But the trouble with toys lies in the colossal amount of plastic used to produce them.

Toy manufacturing uses 40 tonnes of plastic for every 1 million in revenue, making it the most plastic-intensive industry1 in the world. Let that sink in... And with wear and tear combined with an ever-growing demand for novelty, toys rarely have very long lifecycles!

There's no easy fix. No parent wants to be the one to say no to toys, especially when they hold so many great developmental benefits for children. All of this means the industry can no longer play by the rules.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of innovative solutions.

In this edition of the Upside, we delve into the problem, but as always, we shine a light on inspirational examples from the players both big and small who are working to turn the toy story around.
